15 Days Ahead of Schedule! Successful First-Attempt Turbine Rolling and Grid Synchronization of No. 5 Steam Turbine in GDE-Constructed Yueyang Linpaper Project Edit Date:2025/12/16

Recently, exciting news came from the Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction Project for No. 3, 5, and 6 Steam Turbine Units in the Thermal Power Division of Yueyang Lin Paper Co., Ltd., constructed by GDE – the successful first-attempt turbine rolling and grid synchronization of the No. 5 steam turbine. With a construction period of only 46 days, this project set a new record for the construction period of similar renovation projects, completing 15 days ahead of the original schedule, laying a solid foundation for subsequent project advancement.

Part01 Key Performance Indicators 5%-10% Better than Technical Specifications

This retrofit focused on energy saving and carbon reduction goals, upgrading the original 2×50MW extraction-condensing units to 2×40MW backpressure extraction steam turbines (reusing the generators). The retrofit scope included equipment removal, major overhaul of the turbine proper and auxiliary equipment, foundation modification, and optimization of electrical and instrumentation systems.

This retrofit achieved installation precision and operational stability exceeding industry standards, with key performance indicators being 5%-10% better than the technical specifications. Operational data shows that core parameters such as unit vibration values and bearing bush temperature were more than 5% better than the design values. This project significantly enhanced equipment reliability and energy utilization efficiency, reducing heat and power supply costs. After the retrofit, the units’ annual newly added steam supply capacity reached 966,300 tons, with an estimated annual carbon emission reduction of approximately 515,000 tons. This achieves a win-win situation of improved energy efficiency, cost reduction, and environmental benefits, injecting strong green momentum into the enterprise’s high-quality development.

Part 02 Multiple Measures Overcame Difficulties

Facing the dual challenges of a tight schedule and heavy tasks, the project team fully leveraged the experience gained from the No. 6 unit retrofit, conducting multiple rounds of optimization for the No. 5 unit scheme. They moved the target completion date for the dual-unit retrofit from the end of October to September 30th. Innovatively adopting a “seamless handover” model – construction on the No. 5 unit commenced immediately upon the completion of the No. 6 unit technical renovation on August 1st – ensured continuous progress of the retrofit work.

During the technical renovation, the project team implemented a “list management” mechanism to overcome difficulties such as tight equipment delivery, complex external coordination, and significant safety control pressure. By coordinating equipment transportation, installation, commissioning, and personnel allocation, they sequentially completed key milestones including “condenser removal,” “generator rotor insertion,” and “turbine cylinder closure.” They also introduced intelligent monitoring equipment to strengthen technical support, tracking indicators like unit speed, voltage, and frequency in real-time to ensure stable and orderly progress throughout the retrofit. Simultaneously, in collaboration with the owner, they innovatively adopted a “digital management + refined construction” model, breaking down milestone targets into hourly control, achieving precise scheduling throughout the entire construction process, and providing solid technical assurance for the successful first-attempt grid synchronization.

After the dedicated efforts of the project team, the project successfully achieved the challenging overall construction period target for both the No. 5 and No. 6 units. This retrofit not only demonstrates GDE’s leading edge in green technology innovation but also provides a replicable and scalable demonstration case for energy-saving retrofits in the industry, highlighting GDE’s professional strength and problem-solving capabilities in the field of thermal power renovation.
